April Showers Bring…May Flowers!


After putting up with a month of gloomy and rainy weather in April, it’s safe to say that ushering in the month of May also brings with it a hope for new flora.

We all need a few cocktails to put a spring in our step.

The old saying goes: ‘April showers bring May flowers’, so it’s completely fair to be expecting some beautifully colourful blooms to be spouting from the earth this month.

While you’re waiting for these buds to spring forth, why not try these five floral-infused cocktails to pass the time?

Lillet Rose Spring Cocktail

Ingredients

  • 4 oz Lillet Rose
  • 4 oz ruby red grapefruit juice
  • 2 oz of your favourite gin
  • 1 or 2 edible flower blossoms (to garnish)

Method

  • Combine Lillet, grapefruit juice, gin, and ice in a cocktail shaker, shaking until well chilled
  • Strain and pour into a stemmed cocktail glass
  • Garnish with flowers
  • Serve immediately

Scarlet Glow

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Pisco
  • ½ oz Yellow Chartreuse
  • ¾ oz fresh grapefruit juice
  • ½ oz hibiscus tea syrup

Method

  • Add all the ingredients to a shaker filled with ice and shake thoroughly
  • Strain into a rocks glass topped off with fresh ice

Antilles Cocktail

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Armagnac
  • 1 oz dry vermouth
  • 1 oz sweet vermouth
  • ¼ tsp orange flower water
  • Strip of orange zest (for garnish)
  • Brandied cherry (for garnish)

Method

  • Stir together Armagnac, dry and sweet vermouths and orange flower water in an ice-filled mixing glass and mix until cold
  • Strain into a rocks glass with a large cube of ice
  • Garnish with orange zest and a brandied cherry

Golden Jasmine Martini

Ingredients

  • 1 heaping tsp jasmine green tea
  • Boiling water
  • 3 to 4 ice cubes
  • 2 oz vodka (or gin)
  • 1 tbsp sugar syrup or honey
  • Jasmine flowers (to garnish)

Method

  • Put your martini glass in the freezer to chill for a minimum of a half hour
  • Brew a cup of jasmine tea with boiling water, steeping for a few minutes
  • Add the honey or sugar syrup and stir to dissolve
  • Put the ice cubes in a cocktail shaker and pour in the tea through a strainer in order to catch any loose tealeaves, then add the vodka or gin
  • Shake well until ice cold and strain into the frozen glasses
  • Garnish with jasmine petals

Delft Blue

Ingredients

  • 2 oz genever
  • 1 oz crème de violette
  • ½ oz St. Germain elderflower liqueur
  • 1 oz fresh lemon juice
  • Violets

Method

  • Pour all liquids ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice
  • Shake for 15 seconds and strain into a chilled cocktail glass
  • Garnish with a violet or two
